A par time is the average time it takes for each specific class to run each distance at a particular track.
Their are sectional par times and overall par times, they allow you to compare the sectional and overall times of all races and all classes over every distance, at each track.
They tell you whether the quality of the race was average , below average or above average for that class.
Sectional par times are needed to compare and guage the exact pace of the race - slow, average or fast
Par times are essential for the modern day punter or handicapper.
